Reminiscent of early 20th century whaling ship’s whale oil lantern with an onion globe. The old wiring and socket were replaced with new and the light was made into a table lamp. We have updated the wiring again and it has long electrical cord with a inline switch. This marine style lantern features a brass construction that is painted soft bronze color. It still has its original heavy bail handle on top. The original blown glass onion globe is in good condition - take a good look at the pics to see the air bubbles that indicate how old this light is. The top and bottom of the lamp are connected by 4 bolted wire supports which double as guards around the globe. The bulb is changed by releasing the brass knobs and lifting the glass globe. This light is made so that there is some movement between the bottom and the caged globe - not sure what purpose this served - but it might be acting like a gimbal to keep the lantern balanced. The lamp now sits on a wooden base, painted the same color as the lamp. These old oil lamps were called "onion lamps" for their bulbous, onion-shaped glass globes, which shielded a whale-oil flame from wind, rain, and sea spray. Requires Standard Base Bulb - 100W max. (NOT INCLUDED). We highly recommend LED bulbs as they give off less heat and are energy efficient. (SALE IS FOR LAMP ONLY)
